When Alely arrived in the Lehigh Valley from Mexico as a fully-grown adult, she immediately felt isolated from the world around her. Knowing very little English and with only a sixth grade education, it was difficult for her to understand even basic phrases that people were saying to her.
All of this changed, however, one day when she was visiting her daughter’s school. She saw a sign from a place called The Literacy Center that said, “Free English Classes.” Not knowing what to expect, she sent in an application to the Center and, in 2013, was enrolled into the ESL program.
With hard work and the help of her ESL instructors at the Center, Alely was able to boost her speaking and writing skills, reaching intermediate proficiency in ESL in just a few months.
With her improved English skills, Alely has decided to advance her education and is currently pursuing her GED certificate. In addition, with the Center’s support, she volunteers her time at her daughter’s elementary school and its afterschool music program, El Sistema Lehigh Valley.
