Literacy tutoring is one
of the most rewarding
volunteer experiences you
can imagine. When you help
someone learn to read or to
speak and read English, you
enable that individual to
take advantage of a new
world of opportunities.
Simply put—Literacy Changes
Lives.
To become a Literacy
Volunteer Tutor you should:
- Be at least 18 years
of age and have a high
school diploma or GED
- Have solid reading
and writing skills and
good listening skills
- Be patient,
compassionate and
committed
- Be able to commit
three hours each week
for a minimum of six
months
We provide you with
training. We teach you how
to teach someone to read, or
to read better. We teach you
how to teach someone to
speak English or improve
English conversational
skills. And we match you
one-on-one with a student or
with one of our paid
instructors to assist in the
classroom.
Convenient Tutor training
sessions are held every
other month in the evening
or on a Saturday. Once you
complete training, we
provide scheduled follow up
support and informational
assistance upon request. Our
office library is stocked
with a huge variety of
materials, and we also have
16 computer systems for
student use.
